Description
If the Big Six were constructed in the 1920s this would have been the likely scenario on Dec 7th.
For info on the South Dakota Class see this link...

USS North Carolina (BB52)was the only Battleship that escaped the Raid on Dec 7th Unscaved. Mainly because of lack of intelligence accuracy on the Japanese side who mistook a cruiser for her.
North Carolina is seen here safely tucked away in a drydock for maintanance while her sister ships get pummeled in the background.
Even when the Japanese realized their error she still managed to escape damage because the bombs intended for her barely missed and hit two destroyers instead parked in the same drydock as her (In front off screen).
The last bombing raid to North Carolina off (And the fuel storage and docks) got cancelled by Adm. Nagumo who thought that he pushed his luck far enough.

You seemed to have based your description off of the USS Pennsylvania. The difference is that the Pennsylvania suffered little damage during the attack. The USS Maryland also took little damage, even though she was berthed in Battleship Row with most of the other battleships on that day.
